Because I like this show so much, I've really tried to ignore Ellen Pompeo(Meredith)'s sudden spiral into anorexia. Unfortunately, there were a few times this past episode that I was just plain worried about the girl. This is Seattle, a good gust of wind might pick her up and take her away like Mary Poppins. She's a great actress, so I won't make fun of her like I do Terri Hatcher, even though Terri's looking like she's hitting up the craft service table more and more each episode. Now let's get onto the show, because this one was a good one.
McDreamy is taking blood from Meredith, for her mother's Alzheimer's trail testing. They have a cute moment. Later, Meredith and Christina talk about their respective love interests and Meredith refers to Derek as "McDreamy". Of course this sends Christina in a panic because if she's back calling him McDreamy then she must be interested in him again. Meredith tries to deny it, but Christina's not really convinced. Meredith's not convinced Christina's doing the right thing either. Since moving in with Burke, Christina admits to still having her old apartment. She tries to play it down but Meredith pressures her to tell him the truth.
George and Izzie show up with the nasty mutt of a dog, I think they've named him "Doc". I mean I like dogs, don't get me wrong, not as much as cats, but this dog is just wrong. Anyway, he's peed in Izzie's bed. Something tells me this isn't the first time someone's done that to her. Ouch. George eventually gives Meredith an ultimatum, the dog goes, or he goes. They're all surprise to see Meredith hesitate. I don't know any woman who would rather have the dog then cute George O'Malley living under their roof, but I guess after McDreamy, no man compares. George starts to storm out but is stopped by the very very pregnant Bailey. Their first case is a man who's had three of his fingers sliced off. He's a guitar player so he's obviously concerned he'll never play again. Christina and McDreamy take the case and it's clear Christina has some issues with him. Actually, Christina has issues with just about all of her patients. We all know she doesn't have the best bed side manner but I guess this is the first time McDreamy's seeing it. He asks Fingerless if he's a smoker and he says no. When Christina finds the digits she tells him that he's a liar, and that his fingers have cigarette stains on them. They tell him that smoking thins the blood vessels, and after doing this surgery, if he continues to smoke, it may cause the reattachment to go bad. Christina tells the man that his fingers will turn black and fall off. Later, the man asks her if she thinks he can quit smoking, and she says no. Again, McDreamy's not happy with her, he says that if this guy doesn't think he can quit smoking, then he won't, and they might as well not do the surgery. In the elevator he tells her that he's her boss and she shouldn't be talking to him that way. She says that at this moment, he's the guy in the elevator that hurt her friend. I love girl power. He can't really argue with that. Later, Christina goes to Fingerless and tells him that if he tries really hard he can quit. He says that that morning he smoked the last cigarette of his life, not knowing it's the last cigarette. Christina takes him outside and lets him have his real last cigarette. McDreamy sees this and of course, guess what, he's pissed at Christina. Christina later tells Meredith that she has to stand in the back of the room during the surgery as punishment. Fingerless is thankful though, and while the surgery is going on, yes, he's awake, he gives a smile to Christina, which McDreamy sees.
George and the Crypt Keeper
George happens by a woman's room that had hip surgery a few weeks before. The woman should be out, but apparently these doctors are not like the docs at Cook County. Dr. Weaver would have had the old lady out on her ass days ago. George goes to talk to the woman, Sophie, who says she wants to stay at the hospital until her daughter finishes the room she's getting ready for her. At first he's frustrated with her, but she's extremely charming. The Chief obviously has a soft spot for Sophie too, and encourages George, without actually saying it, to try and run some tests on her to extend her stay. She's extremely sweet to George, and overhears him talking about Meredith choosing the dog over him. She gives him a little pep talk about how it's crazy for a woman to choose a dog over him. Later, the woman's daughter shows up and informs George that there is no room at her house for her, she's supposed to be at the nursing home. Sophie tells George that going to the nursing home will make her feel like she's old. George returns the pep talk favor and encourages her by saying she will never be old. Apparently George hasn't really looked at this lady. I think she went to prep school with Honest Abe Lincoln. (of course if you would have seen the Lincoln documentary on The History Channel you would know that Lincoln didn't go to prep school, that was just a little joke.)
Like I said before, Bailey is looking really pregnant, although she's trying to keep up with everyone. At one point she starts having a contraction and I'm thinking she's about to blow. She calls for Addison who tells her it was just pre-term labor, and to not worry about it. Addison also suggests she slow down a bit. Addy must not know Bailey very well, they don't call her the Nazi for nothing. Addison pulls Izzie aside and tells her to look out for Bailey, in case her contractions look like they're too close together.
Izzie sorta sympathizes with Alex
The Chief gives Alex his test results and low and behold, he's going to wait to open them. Yeah, I didn't call that or anything. Oh, and let me guess, he's going to make someone else open it. Okay, let's see if that happens. The case that Alex and Izzie get is a world champion eater, some cute little Asian woman. She's come in with hiccups and they find that she has a small tear in her esophagus. She doesn't speak English so her coach has to translate for her. He says that she can have the surgery after the competition today. They want her to have it immediately, since it's very dangerous. Alex of course is smitten with the girl and tries to flirt. The coach and girl have a laugh at his expense. Later, when Alex goes to check on her, they're both gone, presumably to the competition. Speaking of contests, our interns have a contest of their own. George, Alex and Christina all order what looks like ten or so hot dogs during lunch. Izzie times them as they stuff their faces. Christina does the old tried and true method of eating the dogs first and then saturating the buns with water to make them go down easier. She ends up winning. A few seconds later though she nearly throws it all up. Unfortunately, after awhile, the hiccup girl is back after coughing up blood during the contest. Alex is pissed at the coach, but Izzie stops him from punching him, especially since he doesn't know the results of his tests yet. Eventually, he asks Izzie to open them and guess what, he passed.
Burke and Meredith work on one of his heart patients together. She seems to be in a really good mood. In fact, she's downright giddy. She tells him it's because she just got married. She's extremely lovey-dovey with her husband. Meredith's not buying it and thinks something's extremely wrong with this woman, and that no one is that happy, unless they're a liar. She orders a tox screen and it comes back negative for drugs. Meredith runs into the husband in the corridor, and he tells her he doesn't know what's going on with his wife. He says he figured the "honeymoon" phase would be over by now. A light bulb goes off over Meredith's skinny little head. She falsifies Burke's signature and orders another round of tests. Come to find out, the woman has a tumor that's causing serotonin to be released, giving her this euphoric feeling all of the time. The husband's happy to finally have an answer. Meredith follows Burke out, hoping he's not mad at her. He's not, in fact, he invites her to dinner. He also thanks her for encouraging Christina to move in with him, since he knows that she's Christina's best friend and she listens to her. The next time Christina and Meredith see each other Meredith tells her to not tell Burke the truth, not until she's ready at least.
Hell hath no fury like a nurse scorned
While Bailey is operating on the champion eater, she starts having more contractions and steps quickly back. Izzie tells her she should leave. She does and the Chief steps in. While he's in there a nurse comes in and informs him that due to the piling up of patients and limited respect from the doctors, they're having a sick out, meaning none of the second shift is coming in. I know this happens in a lot of professions, and I'm all for equal treatment and pay, but one group of people I don't want not showing up is hospital workers. Bailey, in the meantime, has been put on bed rest. As she's being wheeled out she makes sure her interns know that she'll be watching. Izzie, in her sweetness, hands Bailey a present from all of them. She scowls as the elevator doors close.
George finally approaches Meredith and tells her that he deserves to stay. Unlike the dog, he's a man, that can talk, that will probably live longer than 9 years, and at some point, if she wants to, she can have sex with. I mean, his speech wasn't that exactly, but it was touching. She decides to give Doc away to the only other loving person she knows, Derek. She and the gang drive the dog to Addison and McDreamy's trailer. Addison runs the dog in the house and Izzie and George leave McDreamy and Meredith alone a second to talk. If Christina was there that wouldn't have happened. It's fairly symbolic, her handing the dog off to Addison, as if McDreamy is the dog, haha, get it. Also having a good night is Burke and Christina, who nestles into bed with him. I mean, I'd certainly have a good night if I was nestled into bed with him. Whoa.
